Chairman & President's Message

Help those who have lost their way and they will become a living testimony of your outstretched hands.  For more than 110 years, Volunteers of America has reached out its hands to pull individuals and families into the light.  The work performed daily by the outstretched hands of our employees, volunteers and board members improves the quality of life for thousands of individuals every year.  The life-changing, life-saving work of Volunteers of America begins with hope, possibilities and dreams.

The board of directors and management team are not the owners of this organization, but instead are passionate and committed stewards who take very seriously the trust and resources that funders and the general public have invested in us.  It is our duty to administer all aspects of our operations in a competent, accountable, ethical and professional manner.

The people behind this organization are not afraid to dream big and act boldly.  We dreamed of establishing an Early Head Start program in San Bernardino, where one did not exist, and we did it.  We dreamed of initiating small assisted living facilities for seniors in San Diego, and we are doing it.  We dreamed of opening a K-6 charter school specializing in the arts and sciences, and today we are on the verge of starting one.  We dreamed of expanding the geographic reach of our services to Arizona and we are set to begin this quest in 2009.  The goals for the future are clear: growth, innovation, program enhancement, performance accountability, service excellence and workforce development.

The commitment and passion behind our mission will result in thousands of individuals and families whose lives will be forever improved through the skills, knowledge and assistance they receive from a Volunteers of America program.  You can help us make a lifetime of difference by supporting the work of Volunteers of America - you can make a difference.

Life Without Black People

This is a story of a little boy named Theo who woke up one morning and asked his mother, “Mom, what if there were no Black people in the world?”

Well, his mother thought about that for a moment, and then said “Son, follow me around today and let’s just see what it would be like if there were no Black people in the world.”
